The Brief
Design a logo for the new craft beer brewing company, Coast Brewing. Take inspiration from the coast and from nautical culture.
Also design a pair of beer can labels, incorporating essential requirements such as alcohol volume and health warnings.
Produce several concepts for each.
Logo Design
Taking inspiration from objects you may find near the coast, I created several logos.
I used circles to represent looking through a telescope, I used triangles to represent flags and in one example I used Morse Code for the word "coast" as an underline, as a kind of hidden reference.
Can Design
Concept One
Taking inspiration from nautical flags I used blocks of bright colours and simple shapes to create visually striking patters that will look different in a fridge depending on how they are stacked and rotated.
Concept Two
I used blocks of paste colours to create a softer look and I used a simple pattern to represent waves. I introduced the "eye" to represent looking out to sea. The shapes could be interpreted as a fish and the eye adds weight to this interpretation.
Concept Three
Each beach contains millions of sand particles and under a microscope each of those particles has its own shape and colour.
In this design I split the labels horizontally in half, where the top could represent the sky and the bottom could represent the land or sea. Another interpretation could be that the top represents the sea and the bottom represents the sea bed. The shapes represent the sand or water droplets.
Concept Four
Perhaps the more playful concepts, these are in more of an illustrative style.
One is intended to show a robot in the sea, the other is intended to show the hull of a ship slicing through the water. In the latter you can see an image of an iceberg sticking out of the water.
Concept Five
Since the beers in the cans will be India Pale Ales (IPA), I've taken inspiration from the Indian flag for the colour scheme.
The concentric circles on the first can represent the waves rushing in and the ripples represent the tide rolling out.
On the second can the blue represents the sea, the black represents the night sky and the horizontal blocks of white and grey represent light coming from a lighthouse, which is represented in turn by a vertical block, seemingly on the coast.
